I have loved this essay since the first time I read it, many years ago. I assign this poem to my students in a class that I teach on Gender and Leadership. I love assigning this essay in a business school–where you’d hardly expect to see Lorde’s work featured. I love watching the students take in her words and absorb them and understand them and feel them. And now I am teaching a class in India (also Gender and Leadership)–it is really a blast to share Lorde’s brilliance, her humanity, her wisdom, with a whole new group of students.

As a high school student and an aspiring community organizer, the message from the poem, and overall the reading, resonates with me and creates a sense of clarity. So many times I am told things are how they are and saying something won’t make such a huge difference. I feel empowered because I have an understanding how my voice can help break the silence. At times when I think about the amount of responsibility that changing a community will have, I am fearful, but I can now say that I can’t let fear dominate my life or my voice. Thank you for breaking the silence: your silences and mine.

Keep the people with insurance in, kick the ones without it out, whether they need it or not. I know some people have had good, helping experiences in them, but it honestly boggles my mind *how*. Especially anyone that’s gone through a year or so in one. They will always seem like one of the most evil places to me.

Personally I would like to see her genitals no matter what her gender is. She’s a superstar, she’s hot, and she has to expect there to be scandals/exploitation/gossip about her because of this. From what I understand of her she probably relishes the attention. I personally don’t care for her music that much, pop’s never been my thing, but I would love to see her do a spread for an adult mag or even find a sex tape that was leaked out. You can call me what you want but I’m just stating my opinion. And the fact that you seem to know what “nobody wants to see” just proves that you’re just as bad as the media that you fight against. Apparently YOU’RE the only one that doesn’t want to see. Food for thought…

Some people have a rather juvenile interest in the genitals of others.

Reminds me of the childhood trick “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours” where the instigator does not reciprocate.

I don’t think Cedar was saying “asshole” is ableist, but I agree that it is busted. I think it, along with “dick” and “pussy” show some seriously body-negative essentializing. It makes me feel icky.

My prayers go out to the victim & the family. Who care how people live their lives. Life is precious to everyone whether it be male or female. This woman was loved & adored by her family….& they loved her no matter what. Ignorance was the true nature of this crime…..May God give the family peace.
